“Wat is je beste herinnering aan Zuid Afrika?” vroeg iemand Derek vlak voor hij vertrok. Derek hoefde er niet lang over na te denken: “De mensen!”

Voor mijn vertrek wilde ik iets voor diezelfde mensen doen. Voor hun gastvrijheid en vriendschap; door hen waren mijn twee jaar in sneltreinvaart verdampt tot herinneringen. Soms vraag ik me af of het allemaal wel echt was.

Dus besloot ik een afscheidsfeest in Soweto te organiseren. Omdat ik met veel organisaties heb gewerkt, zou dat automatisch een groot feest worden. Het terrein van Soweto Home-Based Care – mijn eerste project – was plaats van handeling. Voor een feest in Soweto laat je een tent opzetten. Twee in mijn geval, ook een die dienst deed als keuken.

Met Peter – die de catering voor zijn rekening nam – deed ik de week voor het feest de inkopen. Peter is daar ervaren in, hij weet wat hij wil. Voor zijn inkoopbeleid was hij uiterst merkentrouw en prijsbewust. Bij de slager attendeerde hij me op een halve koe die aan een haak hing. “Als we zo’n heel stuk kopen, is het voordeliger” zei hij me. De koe werd gelukkig wel voor ons in stukjes gesneden – klaar voor de curry.

Natuurlijk was om 12 uur, de officiële aanvangstijd van het feest, nog niets op orde. Zuid-Afrikaners weten dat, vóór 1 uur was er ook niemand. Behalve de Nederlandse vrienden die op bezoek waren, zij hielpen met de laatste voorbereidingen.

Ik had veel uitnodigingen verstuurd, maar had geen idee hoeveel mensen er zouden komen. Vriend Thulani was ceremoniemeester. Hij had eigenlijk maar twee taken: ervoor zorgen dat er niet te veel en te lang gespeecht werd en dat er veel werd gezongen. Daar zorgen hij prima voor. Zijn inleidende teksten waren gevat en de time-keeping was prima.

Tussen alle speeches werd gezongen, dat laat zich eenvoudig regelen. Je staat voor de zaal en zegt “Laten we zingen”. Dan zet altijd wel een vrouw in en in no-time valt de hele zaal in. Meestal meerstemmig, zuiver en uiterst aanstekelijk. Mijn Nederlandse vrienden waren zeer onder de indruk.

Mijn collega’s hadden bovendien een koor uitgenodigd dat uit zo’n 8 jongens bestaat. Zij waren de sterren van de middag. Iedereen was onder de indruk van hun zangkwaliteiten; ze werden steeds gevraagd nog een keer op te treden.

Naast de Nederlandse vrienden waren er een paar blanke Zuid-Afrikaanse vrienden. Zo ook Alan Francis, die ik ken door van de roeivereniging. Alan woont al zijn hele leven (78 jaar) in Johannesburg en was nog nooit in Soweto geweest. “I have never been closer to Africa then I was today” was zijn commentaar.

De speeches waren lief, de cadeaus overweldigend, het eten heerlijk en de sfeer opperbest. Het is dan moeilijk afscheid nemen. Na elk lied dat werd gezongen, vertaalde Thulani de tekst voor ons: “Frans, we love you and you must come back.” En dat doe ik dus ook. Maar dit keer met Auke, da’s toch een ander verhaal. En we gaan ons nu helemaal op de software richten; daar is nog veel meer vraag naar dan ik de vorige keer kon beantwoorden.

Afrika gaat in je bloed zitten. Het zijn de mensen die het ‘m doen. Net als Derek hebben zij de meeste indruk op me gemaakt. En ze zijn de belangrijkste reden dat we terug zijn.

Farewell - April 2008

“What is your best memory of South Africa?” someone asked Derek, just before he left. Derek didn’t need to think long. “The people!”

Prior to my departure I wanted to do something for these very people. For their hospitality and friendship. Because of them, my two years had transformed rapidly into memories. I sometimes wonder if it all really happened.

So I decided to organise a farewell party in Soweto. Because I had worked with so many organisations, it was bound to be a big party. The premises of Soweto Home-Based Care – my first project – were party ground. For Soweto parties, tents are erected. Two in this case, one for the kitchen.

Peter would take care of the catering and the week before the party we went shopping. Peter is very experienced, he knows what he wants. At the butcher he pointed out half a cow hanging there to me. “If we buy the whole piece, it is cheaper” he said. Fortunately they did chop it up for us – all ready for a wonderful curry.

Of course at 12 o’clock, the official starting time, nothing was ready. South Africans know that, no one arrived before 1 o’clock except for the Dutch friends visiting; they helped with the preparations.

I had sent many invitations, but had no idea as to how many people would show up. My Thulani was master of ceremonies. He had two important tasks: make sure people will not speech too long and arrange for lots of singing. He did a fine job. His introducing texts were witty and his time-keeping was excellent.

In between all speeches, there was singing. This was easy to arrange for. When you stand in front of a group of people, you say “Let us sing”. There will always be a lady who starts a song and in no-time everyone joins. Usually meerstemmig, zuiver and very …. My Dutch friends were very impressed.

Next to the Dutch friends, there were also a few white South African friends. Also Alan Francis, who I know from the rowing club. Alan has lived his whole life (78 years) in Johannesburg and never before was in Soweto. “I have never been closer to Africa then I was today” he commented.

My colleagues had arranged for a Zulu dancing group and a choir of 8 young men. They were the stars that afternoon. Everyone was impressed with their singing; they were asked to perform again and again.

The speeches ware nice, the presents overwhelming, the food delicious and the atmosphere fantastic. After every song, Thulani was translating the lyrics: “Frans, we love you and you must come back.”

So that is what we now do. But this time with Auke, that makes a big difference. And this time we will concentrate on the software project 100%; there is much more demand than I could cater for last time.

Africa gets into your blood. It is the people that make that happen. Just like Derek did they impress me most. And they are the main reason we are back now.

This movie has won 8 Oscars , does it really deserve that, one thing is for sure if it was released in India it would have probably flop.

If you had to choose to be really hot or really cold all the time which would you choose and why? I have to deal with both pretty regularly with deployments and stuff.

Right now I'm in the desert. It's really hot during the day and then at work it's always really cold. I think if I had to choose I'd want to be always hot. I hate the desert and I hate being hot, but something about being cold makes me feel like crap.

I've already come to the conclusion that one diet will work wonders for one person yet not make a slight difference to another.
What diets have you done that actually worked for you?
How long did you keep it up? (Yes I'm assuming you gave up at some point)

I've done many diets in my life and each time I gave up keeping it going for various reasons.
One does stand out though and that's the cabbage soup diet. It is meant to cleanse your body of all the bad foods you've had and should only be done for one week since it is not a diet for life. I can say it really worked. My mum and I did it (I think 10 years ago) She lost about 3 kg in that week and looked no different in her appearance. I, on the other hand lost nothing, yet I looked great.
In a nut shell the diet consists of having a certain recipe for cabbage soup which you can eat as much as you want the entire week, and every day you eat something else (can't remember the list though..)

So a mate of mine got pissed at work the other day (i work with him) and at the end of the shift i had to drive him home, there was no way i was letting him drive. He wanted to of course. So because a did this he filled the car up with fuel and bought me beer for when i got home...so this is the first time anything good has come from going to work pissed, or getting pissed at work. And he was talkin crap the whole time we were in the car, so it was hilarious, i was having fun. Turns out he had to get up real early in the morning to go to work again. LOL haha, poor bugger!

It's recently started to warm up here in Sunny England. Now I actually quite enjoy the warm weather and usually I take full advantage.
But one thing that is annoying during the hot summer months is the fact it makes sleeping very difficult. Sometimes I just lay there a soak the pillow in sweat!!
I try to combat this by plugging in the fan next to the bed.

At Virginia Tech, where tailgating and raucous apartment complex parties are time-honored rituals, university officials are turning increasingly to Mom and Dad to curb problem underage drinking.

This semester, the school in Blacksburg, Va., began notifying parents when their under-21 students are found guilty of even minor alcohol violations such as getting caught with a beer in a dorm room.

Although it's common for colleges to alert parents of major alcohol offenses — or when a student faces suspension — Virginia Tech is part of a small but growing number sending letters home on minor ones.

The debate about how much to involve parents in such cases is a balancing act for colleges and universities. Officials want to hold young adults accountable as they venture out on their own, are well aware that drinking is part of the college experience, and also recognize potential allies in a generation of hands-on parents who can help when things go too far.

"I think it helps students open up to parents," said Steven Clarke, director of Virginia Tech's College Alcohol Abuse Prevention Center. "And parents can be helpful in setting boundaries students might need."

The beefed-up parental notification policy is part of a broader strategy that includes alcohol-education classes and a "party positive" program that encourages responsible drinking.

The student reaction to the policy change, not surprisingly, has been less than enthusiastic.

"If you have one beer in the dorm and you get caught, I don't feel like parents should be notified," said Erik Pryslak, a junior engineering major. "Now that we're all in college, we're all adults. It's kind of your responsibility to take care of yourself. If you want to make your parents aware you're about to be kicked out of school, then it's on you."

Studies show that students who say their parents would disapprove of them drinking are less likely to drink heavily once they get to college, said Toben Nelson, an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health who has studied campus drinking.

At Virginia Tech, the school has operated on a "three strikes" system for years: Students get one strike for a minor alcohol violation and two for a major one — things like getting a DUI or vomiting all over a residence hall bathroom. Three strikes and a student is suspended for at least one semester.

After a spate of alcohol-related deaths on college campuses, Congress in the late 1990s changed student privacy laws to lower barriers to parental notification in cases involving students under 21.

Schools took a wide array of approaches in response. Virginia Tech started notifying parents of under-21 students after major alcohol offenses or when a student had accumulated two strikes with two minor ones.

But some parents complained that because they had not been notified of minor offenses, they were in the dark until a student was suddenly facing suspension, said Edward Spencer, Virginia Tech's vice president for student affairs. Hence the change this semester — a move Spencer says also reflects changing times.

Parents of Generation X students were often reluctant to get involved when the school invoked an emergency clause in privacy laws and alerted them of alcohol problems, he said.

"The response would be, 'You know, I'm leaving on a cruise. I'm going to a class reunion.'"

But today, parents of millennials tend to be tethered by cell phone to children who studies show often idolize their parents — so it makes sense to go a step further in parental involvement, he said.

"We'd like to strike a happy medium," Spencer said. "We're grateful for the positive involvement of parents. We find it difficult when their involvement is over-involvement."

Research has found more than 40 percent of college students reported at least one symptom of alcohol abuse or dependance. One recent study estimated that more than 500,000 full-time students at four-year colleges suffer injuries each year related to drinking, and about 1,700 die in such accidents.

"When it comes to safety, there really is a fine line," said Max DiSesa, a sophomore from Durham, N.H. "I completely understand Virginia Tech and they want to keep people safe. But I think this might be overall detrimental to the growth of students."

Some universities already have found success alerting parents earlier. The University at Albany, State University of New York has seen a decline in repeat offenders since it began notifying parents of under-21 students of minor alcohol violations four years ago, said Laurie Garafola, director of residential life.

"I don't send many second letters out to parents," she said.

At the University of North Carolina Wilmington, the philosophy is different. The school — which like many others stresses shared responsibility to parents and students during summer orientation — does not notify parents of minor offenses. Parents, however, are notified before any under-21 student is suspended.

"Part of students coming to college is to learn how to be a responsible adult — and hopefully learn from their mistakes," said Patricia Leonard, vice chancellor for student affairs.

LONDON — An English dog-owner has been fined after taking his pet for a stroll while driving next to him in his car. Prosecutors said Paul Railton was spotted driving at low speed along a country lane in December, holding his dog's leash through the car window as the animal trotted alongside.

Railton pleaded guilty Monday to not being in proper control of a vehicle. His lawyer, Paul Donoghue, said 23-year-old Railton acknowledged "it was a silly thing to do and there was an element of laziness" while exercising his lurcher, a type of crossbred sighthound.

Railton was ordered by magistrates in Consett, northeast England, to pay a 66 pound ($100) fine, plus costs.

He also received three more penalty points on his license and is now barred from driving for six months.

Guess it was a bad case of the "Mondays" - cause I went nuts - and called the company and yell.

diese als wahr berichten.

Hier findet Titz Unmengen Material, was er schreiben kann. Eine weitere Recherche scheint nicht notwendig.

Beispiel: Kaufmann Niko Iordanov bot Arschbomben-Tipps zu 129,- Euro pro Anruf an. Das ganze mit
einer 4-stelligen nicht existenten 0900-Nummer. Diese unbekannte Seite, die nur an Niko Iordanov Kumpels
gerichtet war und eine sarkastische Parodie auf die teuren Mehrwertdienstenummern sein sollte griff
Spiegel-Online Christoph Titz auf um eine Sensationsnachricht daraus zu machen.

Dass Christoph Titz dabei seine Recherchepflicht ignoriert interessiert den Spiegel nicht mehr, da dringend
Themen gesucht werden. Das Nachrichtenblatt verkommt zu einem lachhaften Magazin und sollte bald in
Mad-Spiegel umbenannt werden.

Und wenn Christoph Titz gar nicht mehr weiss, was er schreiben soll beschwert er sich, dass andere
Magazine Satire nicht erkennen. Peinlicher kann man sich nicht verhalten. Grundschlechter Journalismus
den Christoph Titz betreibt.

Ich habe die ganzen Geschichten mitgelesen und finde es tragisch, was Christoph Titz sich geleistet hat.
Ich werde einen Zeichner beauftragen der Christoph Titz malt ... der Hintern wird eine Arschbombe sein mit
dem Text, "Auf Niko Iordanovs Arschbombe reingefallen". Mit dem Spiegel kann er sich dann seinen Arsch
abputzen.

Christoph Titz macht sich sogar noch lustig, dass jemand zu Unschuld strafrechtlich verfolgt wurde, auch
ohne zu recherchieren. Christoph Titz nimmt sich der Meinung eines durchgeknallten Staatsanwalts an und
zeigt, dass er gar nicht daran denkt zu recherchieren. Das ist schlampiger Journalismus, den der Spiegel
bisher vermieden hat. Durch neues Personal wie Christoph Titz sinkt der Spiegel auf unterstes Niveau.

Um noch mehr Satire im Internet zu finden hat es Christoph Titz nicht weit:
Der Spiegel selbst berichtet, dass Neandertaler Sex mit modernen Menschen hatten. Hier weiss man nicht, ob
die Bezeichnung Satire @ Spiegel nur zur Tarnung vorgeschoben ist, obwohl sich der Spiegel des Wahrheitsgehalts
der Meldung sicher ist. Spiegel-Online fragt sogar in einer Umfrage, wer schon Sex mit Neandertalern hatte.
